DIY: Knitted Heart Garlands

DIY: Knitted Heart Garland @owlprintpanda.blogspot.co.uk

Hello Lovelies!

Since valentines day is fast approaching (eep!), I delved into my loving spirit and knitted up a few of these little beauties to decorate my fireplace!!

Or, y'know, you could actually give them to someone you love.

It's been a crazy busy week at uni/work, and this is a brilliantly satisfying quick knit when you sit down at night :)  It's also good for using up those loose ends, you can use any size yarn and any size needles which suits it, your hearts may just end up bigger or smaller depending on your needle choice.

My little hearts are knit in worsted weight yarn on size 4mm (US 6), and end up around 4cm.

You can also make the medium and large hearts too and chain those!!  (see the photo below)

The hearts are knit in the round, and the chain holding them together is crochet!

Find all the instructions below, and get in touch with any of your finished objects or questions about the pattern!!

Are you planning to make anything for valentines?

p.s. If you don't knit, you can buy knitted heart garlands and knitted heart keychains here on etsy :)

Have a lovely weekend!

Amanda :) x

To make a heart garland:

You will need some small hearts (I used 12!), you can find all the knitting patterns for the hearts at the bottom of the page.

For the string:  Crochet (I used size 4 hook with worsted yarn) 40 chains - just simple crochet chain stitch.  If you're unsure how to do this, there are lots of helpful tutorials online, includidng this one from the knit witch!

Every 15 crochet chain stitches, slip your crochet hook through any of the knit stitches on the top of your little heart and crochet this into your next chain stitch (as if doing a double stitch, but with your crochet yarn and a loop of knitting)!

Chain 40 stitches at the end of your crochet chain to finish off.

Congratulations on your pretty heart garland :p

To Make a Heart Chain:

Knit one of each the large, medium and small hearts.

Using crochet chain stitch, hook through a knit stitch on top of your large heart, and use this to begin you crochet chain.  Chain for 25 stitches, and tie the end back into the top of your large heart to make a loop.

In the same manner, pick up a stitch from the bottom of your large heart, begin your crochet chain, 6 stitches, then hook up a loop from the top of your red heart and incorporate this into your chain before tying it off.  Do the same with your med and small heart.

  1. Thank you for sharing this pattern! I just knit one of each size and they turned out really cute. The shape is good, it is the best heart pattern I ever tried and I like the size: just right for a bunting, cute doorhanger, keychain etc. I am thinking of mailing some hearts to a friend who can use a bit of love, she'll love them!

    Love,

    Ilse

    1. I'm glad they worked out so well for you! I never could quite find little hearts I was totally happy with, so that's why this pattern was brewed up! I'm sure your friend would love that,it's such a nice gesture :)

  2. This pattern is so clever! I only figured out by accident that one half slips inside the other and voila! I have a heart! What a fun discovery and it will be the cutest garland on my Stitch Red and Sew Red display at Stitches West!

    Thanks for sharing.
